        Dear Alex,

No, an instance of the kerning and spacing tables for each scaleable
typeface are stored in the bitmap (screen) font. That is why you have the
choice to either import them in Fontographer, have it generate a new set
automatically, and/or adjust kerning pairs manually.

The option in ATM to either "Preserver Character Shape" or "Preserve Line
Shape" (which is, by the way, duplicated for TrueType in Pagemaker) is an
advanced feature for typographers. When a line of text is created the
spacing is initially created, or determined, by the way the QuickDraw/ATM
interface chooses. However, when the final PostScript file is created (and
prepared for download to the printer or imagesetter) the spacing is
determined by the LaserWriter driver, which merges the data with the PPD
parameters.

Where the preserving character shape vs preserving line spacing decision
comes into play is in the RIP: When a character at the end of the line
strays past the bounding box, the driver can either reflow the stray
characters on to the next line and preserve the character shapes, or
dynamically "adjust" (squeeze or expand, usually squeeze) the characters
mathematically to preserve the line.

Which you choose is up to you: For "office-grade" work I choose to
preserver line spacing; but for typography and headline work I choose to
preserve character shapes... Your mileage may vary.

        Cheers!
        Dan
