[WinMac] Mac Clients Freeze During Login

Newbie here so be gentle please...

Normally I don't do NT (not even SFM for NT), but...a friend called.

He's got a mixed lab of PCs & Macs. Sometimes (even frequently) some
accounts seem to freeze during the login process from any of the Mac
workstations. Doesn't seem to matter which Macs, or which accounts.
Other times the same account just zips right thru the process, later the
same day the same account will freeze up. It seems random, although
there may be some slight correlation between the number of logins and
the likelihood that the next user trying to login will freeze.

The freeze occurs after selecting the volume in the Chooser, but before
the server/volume appears on the desktop. Among the symptoms are the
network activity arrows in the menu bar staying solid.

If you leave the Mac alone, it may eventually unfreeze (after 5 to 10
minutes) and complete the login process.

I believe (according to my friend's understanding) that this NT server
has Service Pack 4 loaded.

The Macs are mostly running 7.6.1 or 7.5.5, with a few 8.0s scattered
about. Open Transport 1.1.1 or above.

Wiring is sometimes through Etherwaves to a hub to a switch, others are
directly into hubs. No difference in symptoms.

One interesting note...the Admin account never has any trouble.

Any ideas? Is this a known problem? Did I miss something obvious? What
info have I left out that'll help solve the problem?

Thanks...and open nets...
