hmmm... close, but not quite.
If Appleshare IP was just using Appletalk packets in a TCP/IP wrapper,
then you wouldn't see the real speed advantage that you do with an ASIP
server. What it actually does is it sends AFP (Appleshare Filing
Protocol) information over TCP/IP, which results in the great performance
that you get. What you might be thinking of is AURP, which is a protocol
which is used to link appletalk networks by bridging the packets over an
IP network, that uses Appletalk Packets in an IP wrapper (AppleShare
doesn't equal AppleTalk). Either that or the Appletalk IP gateway, which
uses IP packets in an Appletalk Wrapper.

Also, you don't necessarily need unencapsulated appletalk for the
printer. You can either a) set up a print server that accepts IP printing
(such as NetAtalk or ASIP), or you can print directly to an IP capable
printer. Then you can manage without using AppleTalk on the Network ->
set all the computers to use the Printer Port for AppleTalk, and then
there's no appletalk packets on the network (or, with 8.5, set it to
"remote only").

Cheers,
Liam
