RE: [WinMac] Use NT as a storage for Mac

here's what you're up against:

You need NT server to install Services for Macintosh. Services for
Macintosh lets you install the AppleTalk protocol on the NT server, and
allows you to create a MacFile volume on an NTFS (not FAT) partition.
MacFIle volumes work pretty well, SFM works pretty well, but both have their
shortcomings. For what you have in mind, NT Server running SFM should
suffice.

If you choose to put your Mac files on your NT Workstation box and access
them via FTP, NT will not retain the file type and creator information for
Mac files. When you "download" them from the NT box onto your Mac, the file
type will be "text" and the creator will be "LMAN" (i.e. LAN Manager). This
causes problems, since a Get Info on the mac will see everything as a "PC
Document."

You CAN get around this by Stuffing all files; Stuffit is smart enough to
UnStuff any file with .sit on the end (same for .bin or .hqx) however this
adds extra steps to your process.

Now, I have no idea what MacDrive 98 will do for you, so my comments really
only adress the first part of your question. But I can say that the "server
IP address" option in the Chooser will NOT allow you to mount an NT volume
-- it will time out and not connect at all.
