[WinMac] Converting Mac files to Windows en-masse

I have to transfer over 3000 files stored in many folders to WindowsNT
workstations. These files are mostly Word and Excel documents that need to
be accessible from Microsoft Office 97 on Windows. I realize that the file
contents are readable as-is, but I have two problems - some filenames
contain invalid characters and none of the files have a .DOC or .XLS
extension.

Is there a utility that handles filename / extension conversion
automatically?

Currently, the best I seem to be able to come up with is:

To get the extensions on the file, use FileBuddy 5 to select all files with
the MSWD creator and then append .DOC to all filenames. And so on for Excel.
Unfortunately, if the filename exceeds 27 characters, the extension is not
added which leaves me to manually clean up the rest.

To convert the filenames to valid characters, I can use the built-in PC
Exchange capabilities of MacOS 8.5. I am still figuring out how to create a
larger PC volume than a floppy, but I am pretty sure that won't be a problem
with either a DOS partition on a hard disk or something like that.

Any help would be appreciated.
