Awhile back I had the same problem as you. We are in the process of
going from being an almost all mac shop to a all PC shop, and that means
converting over 300 machines with hundreds of files on each. Last month
someone mentioned a small utility that is shareware called Namecleaner.
I believe the latest version we got is at 1.9 I got the program and
tried it and it works great. You can do single files or a whole hard
drive at a time. It has the ability pre-set to weed out and change
illegal NT file characters to legal ones, while appending the proper
suffix all at the same time. You can even make it so it appends .doc to
your simpletext docs, so that they'll open in Word instead of wordpad,
which is very nice. I highly recommend it. And it costs only like 20-25$
per copy with batch licensing available. Hope this helps
