I'm sorry I don't have your original message so I'm going to make some
assumptions. I'm going to assume that you're connecting the Mac an PC with
ethernet cables, either directly with a crossover cable or through a hub.
I'm also going to assume that you can live with sharing files between them
when they're not connected to the internet.

If you want to share files between a Mac and PC and want to spend as little
as possible you can run ftp or web server software on one or both of them.
Just give each machine a phony IP address (start them with 127 and make
them unique) and when you use a browser or ftp client to look at the other
machine, just type in the IP address since there won't be a valid hostname
or DNS to do the resolving.

MacOS 8 and later has a "personal" web server which works with the
traditional file sharing. Internet Explorer for the Mac also includes a web
server I recall. I'm not sure these have the capacity to allow file
uploading so they would only be sharing files one way.
There are a number of free ftp and web servers for PCs. I don't know of a
free ftp server for the Mac but Net Presenz is supposed to be excellent and
is only $10.

The problem with this method is you need different TCP/IP settings for file
sharing vs. connecting to the internet. On the Mac it's pain to set up but
once it is Location Manager makes it easy to switch. One Win95/98, changing
the TCP/IP settings requires a restart.

My vote would still be for using DAVE but I can certainly understand having
more time than money :-)
