On the mac, look at your PC Exchange control panel. This maps DOS/WIN
extensions to macintosh applications.

..hqx is the extension for binhex, so Stuffit Expander is the correct mac
program to run. If you need to split the .hqx extension from the Stuffit
application, turn off PC Exchange and see if that works.
