Adding Extensions to Mac Files

We are using an Intergraph Extreme Z machine for email running Windows for
NT. We are running Outlook Xpress as our email program. We take the files
our customers send and transfer them to our Mac. When we receive files from
a customer's Mac the program is adding an .hqx extension to the files. When
we try to open the files on our Mac it thinks they are compressed files and
tries to launch Stuffit Expander. Does anyone have any idea of a setting
that is causing this? If the files are sent as compressed files the Mac can
open them OK.
