YES, they are the same.

MacLan installs on PC's, Dave on the Mac

MacLan implements Appletalk on PC's, Dave implements SMB on the Macs.

Which is better would depend on the number of PC's versus Macs.

It all depends what type of printers she has, But probably yes.
If the printers are already networked, maybe all she needs is Powerprint
pro, otherwise she would probably need some other tools.
Let me know the specific printer models and how they are connected and I can
