Skip it. The new versions can always open these files, so converting them
is not necessary. They will convert automatically when you open and
resave them, so why bother doing it before you actually use them again?

If it is a matter of changing type/creator codes for a Mac to a current
version, there are plenty of utilities to do this on multiple files
quickly. I use one called MiniConversion. It should available at
<http://members.xoom.com/tsha/tom/>. Actually, this should not be
necessary for Word/Excel files, either. These two programs (98 versions)
can still easily read all of the old formats, and save in many of them.
