I am no expert in these matters (particularly NT) but reading this list
has lead me to believe NT requires a knowledgeable person to service and
maintain. I think others with the NT expertise will advise you what will
work if you go that direction.
The programs you mention are available on Mac (I am not sure of the Now
products and their current status). Filemaker pro is cross platform
compatible and networkable. For dial in access I imagine there are a
number of solutions but Timbukto comes to mind - available on both Mac
and PC this program allows you to "work" on the secretary's desktop
computer remotely (after dialing in through the modem or hooking up to
the ethernet). I use Timbukto with several remote servers to access the
database by sharing the desktop and very quick file exchange.
The pro's of the Mac route are:
1) your secretary already likes Macs and is trained on it. This is no
small matter since she will be doing most of the work
2) I think the Mac solution has all the sofware you mentioned, or
something very close. There is even some Mac specific church software
(Church Membership Keeper) so if such stuff is required. There are
Filemaker Pro database consultants/ programmers that can help you with
that aspect.
3) I really believe Macs are easier to maintain, there is great maillist
help. And for such a small job/ network/ demand NT might be overkill.
I would think an iMac would be enough computer ($1299), but the desktop
units could be considered. I have a cheap Mac compatible laserprinter for
$1000. Seems like one could hit the target price.
