[WinMac] Mac on NetWare

I have an old LC475 with 36 megs RAM and a Farallon ethernet card and I'm
trying to get it to work with a Novell NetWare 4.11 network. I've got the
mac client 5.11 with the update MCLUPD4. The people at my place of
employment (an educational institution) don't support anything but
Windows, although they tolerate other OSes, so I can't get any support
from them. I would be very, very happy to get this to work, since their
usual attitude towards macs is that they can't work well on the network
here and they might even do some damage (no specifics of course).

Now I get internet access just fine with DHCP assignment of my ip address.
I can also log on and off the NetWare network with no problems. However
there are some oddities:

     1. All filenames are reduced to 8.3 namespace. We use Win95 as well
as 3.1
around here, so I know that the files really have long names; they
appear to be just truncated (i.e., no ~ or anything).
     2. If I try to copy a file from a netware volume to my mac, it works
fine
if the file is a text file with an original 8.3 name. Otherwise I
get a
disk error and the copy doesn't complete. (Binary 8.3 files lock
up the
machine for a while, but they still end with a disk error.)
     3. If I try to copy from my mac to the netware volume, I get two
kinds of
errors: -51 (refnum error) if the file has an 8.3 name and -50
(paramErr - error in user parameter list) if not.

My account works perfectly well on a win95 machine, and I have complete
permissions for all the volumes I'm trying to access from my mac.

Is there something missing on the server side, or is there something else
I can try?

Thanks.
