I hate to ask the obvious, but have you set your FTP server to allow a
known user to write to a directory on your HD? If he's trying to login
using the standard 'anonymous/email address as password' your FTP
server's default settings (which should allow for read-only access for
anonymous FTP users) would prevent him from writing any file to your
machine.

Even given his 'fairly new' status, it might be worth pointing him
towards Peter Lewis's NetPresenz, a US$10.00 shareware FTP, HTTP and
Gopher server for the Mac OS.
It's small, elegant and very easy to set-up. If your co-worker has ever
used the Mac OS's built-in personal file-sharing to allow someone to
share a folder on his machine then he can setup NetPresenz, since it uses
the same interface (and tools).
You'll find all of Peter's tools at <http://www.stairways.com/> and
NetPresenz in particular at <http://www.stairways.com/netpresenz/>.
Hope this helps.

Brian Forte.

You can have it fast, cheap or right. Pick two.
