While I don't use it at work, At Ease is a real life saver at home. It
allows me to set up the computer for multiple users, and for the most
part only allow them to access certain applications and files. So, I
can feel completely comfortable having all my tax and accounting
materials accessible through the Mac's finder -- while at the same
time letting my five-year-old boot-up and run one of her favorite CDs.

I don't have the latest version, but if you don't want someone to
access something from an added pull-down menu on the menu bar (in my
version at least), you need to make sure not to have that menu added.
That can involve the Extension Manager and restarting, not the most
convenient way to go. I don't know if that is still the case in the
latest version. On the plus side, though, I've added a seven disk CD
changer to the computer with a pull down menu to select the disk --
and my five-year-old operates that just fine.

In fact I'll never forget the day (she was three) she walked into the
study, slid up the top to the roll-top desk, powered-on the Mac,
clicked GO in At Ease (we set her up to enter her area without a
password), and started on one of her favorite apps. It was that easy
for her -- though my access to the finder was password protected, so
she wasn't able to get to it.

I use both Mac and PC at work, and should warn anybody who thinks
logging on with username and password in Win95 offers similar
protection -- you're wrong. Just hit the escape key, and you'll
continue right to the desktop (go figure...). I'm not using Win98, so
I don't know if that's been corrected.

Also, At Ease is used by most schools that have Macs that I've seen.
Great little (though slightly imperfect) security app.
