It sounds like there's not a working Domain Name Server (DNS) or else it's
IP address hasn't been entered into your TCP/IP (or MacTCP) control panel.
If it's the latter, ask for the address of a reliable, local DNS and enter
it into the TCP/IP (or MacTCP) control panel. If the problem is the
former, you can create a "Hosts" file to be placed in your System Folder
which contains the Host Name to IP Address table for the local hosts you
require regularly. The problem with this is that it's maintained locally
whereas a good DNS is administered centrally.

I've found Mac TCP Watcher to be a real hand tool for checking whether my
DNS is providing the forward (name to IP) and reverse (IP to name) lookups
properly. It also has "ping" and "trace" functions through which you can
check your connection to a specific host.
