You have to use AppleShare 3.6.5 (IIRC) or less to use Pegasus Mail (the
version that came with 7.5.5) This worked fine for me, _but_ I was
connecting to a Novell 3.12 server. There were apparently major
architectural changes to the way Apple did things on Novell networks
that broke pegasus.

This is one reason among others that we went to a Unix box running IMAP
for our e-mail here.
