It is correct at least for dialin authentication but there's hope. As
explained at this page:

Apple Remote Access 3.1, included in 8.5 will support MS-CHAP, the standard
authentication protocol for NT. If that won't work for you there are links
at that page to third party products for PPP which inlude the necessary
authentication method.

If I remember correctly AppleShare passwords are in clear text if *unless*
you use Microsoft's UAM which is included in the Mac share volume
automatically created when SFM is installed on an NT server.
