The problem isn't so much the hardware, as the actual file transference.

Hardware you need: Ethernet adapters on both, and a crossover cable.
(about $6-$20 depending on where you buy it and how long it is) Both
need to be set up with unique IP numbers. For expandability in the
future, though, it's not much more expensive to buy a little mini-hub
(MEI Micro sells 8-port simple 10-base-t hubs for $40 or so) and make it
a real network.

Software you need: PC MacLan on the PC _OR_ DAVE on the Mac. Since you
have MacLan install that on the PC, share your volumes and that's it.
MacLan lets PC's see Appletalk shared volumes, DAVE lets Macs see NT or
Win95 shared disks. Whihc you use really depends on what the majority of
the computers are on the network. For a mostly Mac/appletalk network,
buy PC-MacLan, for a mostly PC/NT network buy DAVE, if you can't for
some reason, run NT Services for Macintosh.

Alternatively, if the object is just to transfer files, set up War-FTP
(a freeware FTP server for Windows95/NT, available at
http://www.tucows.com , and many other fine online shareware depots)

FTP the files from the Mac to the PC using any Mac FTP client, such as
Anarchie or Fetch.

Fetch will want to transfer them as Mac .bin files in many cases. (Did
that this morning when I FTP'ed some pict files from my Mac to my PC at
work.) That is easily handled by getting and installing Stuffit Expander
for Windows, again, free software available from
http://www.aladdinsys.com which is a great deal anyway, since it
unstuffs just about any format you could think of: .sit, .bin, .hqx,
zip, .gz (IIRC). I don't know about .arj or .tar files.

It will even stick the appropriate extensions on the ends of the files
for you...I stuffed the picts up in a folder, and when I ran Expander on
the Windows box they all had nice little .pct extensions on them and QT
icons.
