If all you need is to connect a PC and a MAC, all you need is a crossover
cable.
Your local CompUSA, Microcenter (Or any other computer store) can provide
you one for about 10$ making one is easy,
but you would need to buy or borrow the tools, etc.

(As long as both the mac and the PC have 10 Base T cards)

I have found PC Maclan http://www.miramarsys.com to be the best software for
this situation
