I'm coming in late on this thread, but to me it sounds like Bill Chapman
may not have the most recent video drivers for his 1710 monitor. Apple had
some problems with their multisync monitors, and the 1710 AV had additional
problems. Should be more information about these issues in the Info Tech
(or Technical Library) area of Apple's webpage. Best solution would be to
install/re-install System 8.1. Or look for the most recent multisync
drivers on the webpage.
