Re: [WinMac] Connecting a LW 12/640

I have two points:

1, LPR ports cannot be captured , that is a term that only applies (in this
context) to the appletalk protocol, it just means changing the postscript
printer type to something other than laserwriter, thereby rendering it
invisible in the macintosh chooser, using the laserwriter driver. (I forget
the exact postscript instructions that are required)

2. If you want to share files from an NT machine to macs, you either neet to
install NT Server $$$$ or use MacLan from http://www.miramarsys.com. With NT
server, you also need to use NTFS, IIRC Maclan does not require NTFS,
although I would use it for it's reliability and other features.

---------
I have had a lot of problems sharing appletalk printer thru an NT server, It
works, but is really not that usefull, unless you have a lot of users or a
lot of printing.

It is much better to just let the mac users print to the LW directly, and
either use appletalk or IP (LPD/LPR) to print from the NT workstations.
If you want to use LPR to print to the LW, just install TCP/IP printing in
the services panel on the network control panel.

Once you have rebooted -one of NT's biggest flaws- then got to the printer
control panel and add a local printer, when you tell it to add a port , you
can add either a TCP/IP or Appletalk port.

Good Luck
- Jorge

BTW, these are only my opinions.
