The problem we've encountered using built-in AppleTalk in conjunction with
Novell's AppleTalk stack is that the "special" warnings associated with
expiring passwords and grace logins are not received.

When logging in under Windows, users are notified when their password has
expired and how many grace logins they have remaining before they're locked
out completely. Once locked out, they are still told their password has
expired. By comparison, Mac users never receive the grace login warnings,
and once they exceeded the limit on grace logins, the message they get
about why the login was refused implies the password was incorrect, not
expired.

If there's some simple way to alleviate this problem, I'd love to hear of it.
