If this is the same update I loaded a week or so ago, then take note that the
updated versions have version numbers which are very similar to the old (e. g.
Ver "5.1 (970716) PTF" vs. "5.1"). When I first looked at them I thought they
were the same as what I had already installed (maybe I'm not up on version
numbering but I would have expected 5.1.a or 5.1.001 or some such) but the size
and creation dates are different. The update allowed me to connect as described
below.

I'm not up on the details from the server side, but I use Apple Remote Access to
connect to the company network via modem then use Chooser/AppleShare (the
company IT guys claim NetWare network browser won't work but I haven't verified
that) to connect to the NetWare server. The setup of the MacIPX control panel
doesn't matter; I leave it set to Ethernet whether I am connected directly to
the in-plant ethernet or connected via ARA/modem. Hope that helps.
