Many thanks to everyone who replied to me so promptly, individually and via
the list.

The fix seems simple now but it was obscured by the references to the
"Virtual PC 2.0 upgrader" and Connectix's naming of the 1.01 disk image
update instructions as "For Windows95".

(i) install VPC 2.0 as standard.
(ii) Trash this new C: drive and point VPC 2 at the old C: drive container
(iii) Mount the VPC 2 "Extras 2.0" drive container as the D: drive and
Restart VPC
(iv) VPC automatically runs the VPC20ADD.EXE on this drive container to
update the C: disk image
(v) Let it do its stuff, restarting as necessary, noting the caveat in the
manual re. if you want to install "3Dfx" video card s/w. This installation
of "VPC 2.0 Additions" == updating the "C:" image
- and then 2.0 to 2.01 is as per Connectix' instructions using their free
1.2MB updater.

I hope this wasn't just a waste of bandwidth - I certainly found it
disconcerting that Connectix had overlooked a huge class of VPC users given
these modern conventions of trying to document all common installation
scenarios at length

There is one thing which doesn't totally square with the VPC 2.0 Addendum
about file copying - "drag and drop" from the Mac desktop to the PC
desktop does work with _files_ but it doesn't work with folders unless you
make VPC place "F: Desktop Folder" on its list of shared folders ( or
G:... ). If you use a "boomerang" variant which manipulates the Desktop
Folder to enhance the Mac environment you may be told "Drive F: is
inaccessible". (I was using Default Folder" - I don't know yet if this
applies to Action Files too)
