Subject: NT troubleshooting

Last week, for the first time since I installed it sometime last November, I
saw our NT Server go down in a system-level crash. The blue screen of death
I'd always heard about finally appeared. Worse, it went down again minutes
after a reboot. (Stable again since, thankfully...)

My question: what should I pay attention to when this happens? I'm used to
cryptic Mac OS errors, not full screen dumps of crash data. Is there a
standard procedure for dealing with crashes on Windows NT? (On the Mac, I
might try a variety of stuff after persistent crashes...Norton, SCSI
cables, PRAM, etc.) Are there built-in utilities I should use? Chkdsk?

Is reinstalling parts or all of NT a good option? Is Norton Utilities worth
anything on NT?

In our situation, the general stability of NT Server has been nothing short
of astonishing, but I'm uncomfortable with its complexity (and my lack of
specific troubleshooting knowledge) when problems arise. Worse, since NT
now forms the core of our Mac network, I definitely do not want to blunder
into a day or two of down time unexpectedly.

[A quick aside: if I upgrade our server (new machine), is there anyway of
saving its myriad settings, or must I simply start from scratch?]

Finally, I can't resist this comment: while the knowledge I've gained
steadily since being introduced to the Mac back in the 7.1 days has served
me well throughout my computer-related career, the hundreds of hours I put
in learning and troubleshooting Win 3.1 (back when it was first introduced)
seem utterly wasted...

Thanks in advance,

David Bruns
