*I do not know the EXACT mechanism, but a visit to MS or Apple Tech
support web sites should help there.*

As I understand it, when you open a server/application/file Apple Menu
Options will create an alias to the item in the respective recent
servers menu. I *SUSPECT* that when you get the delay the Mac OS does
not understand the server you are connecting to as an alias in the
recent menu, but sees it as a server with a conflicting name. So it
tries to resolve the two. Resulting in a lengthly wait while it tries
to resolve the conflict by looking on the network for the conflicting
server. This can also happen when opening a file or application that is
on a server because the Mac OS has to make the server connection prior
to using a file/folder.

See you,

Tom
