As far as I know, most notebook computers stay cool by heat conduction
through the case. The case warms up and then heat energy is lost by free
convection from the case to the air (or by conduction to the lap, the table,
etc.).

Also, your battery and screen are most likely not in use when using an
external monitor, so less waste heat generated.
