Depending on your config, it should match or exceed KAshare's performance.

NetAtalk ,http://www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk/ does not support
Appleshare/IP natively,
but a very easy to apply patch enables Appleshare/IP.

NetAtalk with the asun patch for Appleshare/IP

ftp://ftp.u.washington.edu/public/asun/netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.0a18.2.tar.gz

I can't give you anything other than anecdotal evidence, since I have not
measured the performance, but it sure ***seems*** very fast on my network,
much faster than NT.

I am the Sr. Sys/Net Admin for a newspaper publishing group, we use
everything from Appleshare 3.x to Novell to NT to Suns, I am comfortable
enough with Linux/NetAtalk, that I am planning to install it at some
production sites where it might make sense.

Good Luck.

I use it in my office and recommend Linux+Samba+Netatalk+asun patch
