Should I get a desktop or a Powerbook?

I will be starting a new job teaching in a university department with a
mixed Mac/PC environment. I've been told to pick a computer system to buy.
I want to stick with my familiar Mac interface, so now my question is:
should I get a desktop (or tower), or should I get a mid-level Powerbook. I
know I can attach a monitor and keyboard to a Powerbook if I want to. Any
thoughts from any of you out there about the pros and cons of using a
Powerbook as one's main computer? Anyone know of any books or websites that
discuss this topic?

Secondly, do any of you know of a Powerbook discussion list? I haven't had
any luck finding one.

I have to make a decision soon, so I hopefully I will get some feedback
from some of you.
