Yes, it will work, and nope, you don't need a special cable. An IDE
drive is an IDE drive is an IDE drive, as far as I know. You may,
however, have to use FDISK in DOS on the PC to wipe the drive clean.
Make sure that the NEC has a free IDE controller, or a least a free
"Slave" setting on the controller that's in it, and check Maxtor's Web
site (if you don't have docs or a spec sheet) for the DIP switch
settings to make the drive either Master or Slave for the controller to
recognize, depending on which connection is free.

I think an Ultra DMA drive should work in a 6500, but I don't know if
the 6500s IDE controller will give you all of the speed the drive's
capable of. (I don't know if Ultra DMA drives have different cables or
not-I suspect not-but someone else on this list probably knows.)
However, Apple Drive Setup will probably not recognize the drive. If it
does, great, but if not, I'd recommend trying Silverlining, FWB Hard
Disk Toolkit, or another commercial driver package. Silverlining gets
the highest recommendations from most people I know; FWB does have some
problems. Again, it's probably wise to FDISK the drive on a PC first to
make sure it's clean.
You may wish to buy a cheaper, non-Ultra DMA, IDE drive for the 6500,
since you can get more capacity for the same money.
