To sum it up: create a small System folder with only the folowing

Appearance Extension
Text Encoding Convertor (if 8.1)

Remove the Finder and put in a copy of VPC.
Open VPC with ResEdit and "Get Info" on the file. Change the file type

creator codes from: APPL/VtPC to FNDR/MACS.

The computer will now load VPC thinking it's the Finder. This speeds
thingsup quite a bit.
I like the sound of this solution and have been thinking- Could I set up
something like this on an SyQuest drive cartridge or similar, I am
constantly fighting to reduce the build up of junk on the hard disk to
keep space free for photoshop etc.
Anybody out there tried this approach?
Prem Shah, i also live in edinburgh, any chance of seeing you set up
working?
