This is easy. You need ethernet (on both ends), a hub ($100 or so), and
no router. Just Wingate (gateway/proxy server from
http://www.deerfield.com/wingate/). Wingate runs on the PC. Wingate's
documentation is outstanding; written for newbies.
This get you a little intranet in which all machines can share an
internet connection to the outside world (based on an ISDN modem in my
case).
Forget Dave unless you've gone to NT school. I've made two runs at
installing it and bounced off their non-documentation every time.
Decided that using Anarchie is quite an acceptable way of sharing files
between PC and Mac, without trying to wedge gratuitously new terms
(Domains, indeed) into this weary old Mac/Unix brain.

Any modem on the PC will do. Wingate dials and manages it automatically
to create (and drop) connections as needed...from either PC or Mac.
Really slick.
>3. Is it possible to use this Mac-to-PC link to print from EITHER
computer

Out of my depth here. Printer's in the shop so I've been unable to test.

PC?

I'm in the middle of upgrading my whole system (thanks to a recent Paul
Allen award; see http://www.virtualschool.edu/98a). I'll install my
existing 20" Apple monitor on the new G3, use the 8500 Mac as a headless
server, and replace the Toshiba laptop with a big PC with its own 20"
monitor. Tidbits has recipes for using BOTH monitors from the Mac and
switching the new one to the PC as needed.
Main issue: can my desk stand the weight ;-) Those monitors are HEAVY.
See Tidbits back issues or send a note to Adam Engst. He's the one that
pointed me this way.
