I must agree with the theory of buying a secondary machine instead of
VPC. I did a comparison of an 8500 with a PowerLogix 300/300 card, U/W
SCSI, and 200+mb RAM running VPC 2.0. Benchmarks indicate that it was
about one-third the speed of a Sony Vaio that retails for $1199. I even
tested with the Sony at a big disadvantage - it had the stock 32mb RAM.
For $1199 you'll have a PC to allow for true cross-platform work.
I just recently purchased a new Compaq 5000, PPro200, U/W SCSI 2.1gb HD,
32mb RAM, Matrox Millenium Video, NT Workstation, 10/100 Ethernet - all
for $899! I added a second PPro200 and 128mb RAM and now I have a really
nice machine for under $1,500.
Summary: Look for a good deal on a secondary machine.
