We have had a great deal of success with the G3/Virtual PC combination.
We run Windows95 in VirtualPC on a PowerMacintosh G3/266 with really
good performance. In fact, I had VirtualPC set for full screen mode and
one of my PC buddies commented on the speed of my "new PC."" He about
passed out when I hid the VirtualPC window to show that I still had my
same Mac.
Of course, this means buying a brand new machine, but if your friend
still has a 6100, then it's about time anyway. You can get a new G3/266
for $1700 on the educational price list, a ViewSonic monitor (with the
mac adaptor) for about $350, and another 64mb (for a total of 96mb) of
RAM for about $130 from Techworks. Add a copy of VirtualPC for ~$150
and a two button mouse (for that real window feel) and you have a
machine that will run Windows95/98 (or NT or Linux or Solaris) and the
MacOS for around $2400.
