    Hi, again --

After having gotten various suggestions on this list for being
able to print from OS X to my old LaserJet 5MP, I followed what
seemed like the easiest route: I bought an old Farallon
    EtherWave on eBay.

For $25 plus $7 shipping (when the postage was actually $1.32),
I received an Etherwave in what looks like reasonable condition,
although it did not arrive with a power adapter. (I hate buying
things on eBay!) Luckily I had an old adapter from a Zip drive
that plugs into the unit. The red power light goes on.

I hooked everything up the way it seems it ought to be done, but
my computer cannot see the printer:

--the serial plug on the end of the EtherWave's cable is
plugged into the serial port of the LaserJet

--an Ethernet cable from my network switch is plugged into one
of the two RJ-45 ports on the EtherWave

--the red power light and the green "link" light for that RJ-45
    port are both lit

--I can see the yellow "transmit" light for that RJ-45 port blipping

--AppleTalk is enabled on my computer (10.2.5)

There is no connection to the printer in Print Center, nor in
the HP LaserJet Utility (bless HP for making an OS X driver &
    utility for this 8-year-old printer!)

Did I miss a step somewhere? Did I get this plugged together
wrong? Do I have to put another ethernet cable into the other
RJ-45 port, and then what do I plug the other end into?

I know the ethernet cable I used is good, because I unplugged it
from a computer that was on the network.

    Thanks,

    kazar
