RE: [WinMac] Cable vs DSLFrom: Peters J B (Brooks) CRBE ("Peters)Date: Wed Jan 15 2003 - 15:32:58 EST
Tom,
First off, do you know that both alternatives are available? I have DSL, but know that it's dependent upon your distance from the telco's substation, and the quality/type of wire in-between. Cable-based service, on the other hand, seems top be available as long as that service is coming to your home.
I have heard that cable throughput can depend on the number of customers and their bandwidth utilization, since all share the same "line". My DSL max throughput is always at the rated levels whenever I test it with saturated uploads or downloads (upload rate < download rate for me).
I've had residential DSL for about three years and have been very pleased once the early kinks were oversome. Although I used IPNetRouter to create a "internal" network for multiple Macs, PCS, and our TiVo, the various cable/DSL routers now available are probably simpler products to use.
