I'm no expert (or even enough experience with this to qualify as a novice)
but I think what you're asking about is a PBX (private branch exchange)
which may be simple to do with a single piece of telephone equipment.
You could start by dropping by a local ATT or Radio Shack store and ask
your questions there.
