We use netatalk/samba to provide Home Directory service to all of our
students. Their HomeDirs are auto-mounted in all of our labs as soon
as they log in (Macs and PCs). Both packages have "veto" options
that hide normally "invisible" files from the "other" platform that
doesn't natively know they're supposed to be invisible.

The latest build of netatalk (finally!) supports connections by OS X
clients, but does NOT yet support OS X long file names, which can
cause you trouble.

We have no problems with throughput on our network to and from our
HomeDir server (all over 100Mb ethernet on our "labnet").
