Tom, he's running a Linux distribution. Dataviz doesn't make any software
for UNIX.

Brian, I'm not really a Linux guy but I think I can fill in some details.
With the "auto, noauto" thing, I think the first auto means it should
autodetect the file system on the disk, that is figure out that it's
formatted hfs on its own. The "noauto" means it should not automount the
device when fstab is invoked, when the computer boots for example.

In UNIX, each file system has its own mount program, such as mount_cd9660
for CDs and when "auto" is set, it's supposed to pick the correct one,
presumably based on some initial test of the file system. I'm not sure where
mount programs are kept (in OS X they're in /sbin/) but you might want to
confirm that mount_hfs is there. You could also try changing the line in
fstab from auto to mount_hfs then try an HFS formatted Zip.

Normally you have to be 'root' to mount drives but I think some tools get
around that. Sounds like xhfs wasn't run as root and requires it.

You need something like MacOpener from DataViz to be able to read those
Mac disks on a PC.

There are some other utilties that do the same thing. This is just the
first one that comes to mind.
