Well, back in November, the director of QuickTime product marketing
seemed to indicate that MPEG 4 was going to be a big part of the next
version of QuickTime:

But apparently things stalled when the MPEG-4 patent holders demanded
25 cents per MPEG-4 video encoders or decoders, with a $1 million/year
cap from their licensees. They also demanded a 2 cent *per minute*
fee for each hour of video content.
