In order to get samba to a) use NetInfo passwords and b) communicate
using something other than clear text, you need to have
authentication manager (tim) (think Lan Manager). tim is included
with Mac OS X, but I'm not sure the headers necessary to build
against it are.

You should get samba out of Apple's cvs repository if you want to try.
