While I don't use this utility myself , I know a few Mac users that like
Font Reserve from Bitstream.

"Font Reserve effectively handles and provides quick access to thousands of
fonts. Activate, view, sort, and copy fonts without guesswork or hassles.
Now with Version 2.6, you can download the fonts that you need directly from
the Internet!

System Requirements:
 - Compatible with Power PC Macs, including G3s, G4s, and iMacs
 - Compatible with System 8.0 or later, including 8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 9, 9.1 and
OS X Classic mode
 - 6MB RAM recommended
