Next message: Jeff Nehring: "[WinMac] Windows 98 Security"
We have a small mixed network in our office: about a dozen PCs, about two
dozen Macs. The network has evolved, so there are various hubs, switches
and routers connecting it all. Some have SNMP support, some don't.
A recent event reminded us how little ability we have to monitor our
network, and understand what's happening on it. If we start getting
terrible problems, it takes us a while to understand that it is the network,
and then we're usually reduced to power-cycling the central hubs and
switches, progressive disconnection and reconnection, and similar techniques
to try to either understand what the problem is, or at least make it go
away.
Would SNMP software help? Is it only of any use if all our equipment is
compatible? If it would be useful, can anyone recommend something (Mac or
PC)? If it's basically useless because our network is too mixed, then a
second question would be 'how useful is it anyway?' (eg, should we make sure
that all future purchases are SNMP compatible, so that we can eventually
make use of it, or would it just not do that much for us?)
Yours in ignorance,
