Hi Bob...
Depending on your needs, you may not need a server at all. If all you
want to do is connect them to the network (giving them access to the
campus network, the Internet, and mail servers that you don't run),
then all you really need is a network drop, and a hub.
This assumes that your campus is willing to route the network to you,
and provide IP addresses for your Macintoshes, either statically, or via
DHCP.
They may ask that you pay for the hub or switch. An 8-port switch would cost
you less than $100.
If you wanted to run your own mail server, web server, or file server,
then yes, you'd also need a server. But just to get connected? Talk
to somebody in the campus IS department. It oughtta be easy, since
all the Macs already have Ethernet.
