    It's conceivable that the problem iMac has it's disk formatted as "HFS" rather than "HFS+" which results in larger files. I'm a little surprised the effect is first noticed on programs, since they tend to be larger and less prone to display the differences between HFS and HFS+. (So maybe I'm guessing wrong.)

    Anyway, to check it, select the hard disk icon and choose "Get Info" from the File menu. There's a "Format" line wherein you can distinguish whether the volume's format is HFS (Mac OS Standard) or HFS+ (Mac OS Extended).
