Apologies in advance for the OT nature of my question.

Has anyone else gotten annoyed with the really long doc
types in OSX (well, most OSs for that matter)?

    Examples:
    "Microsoft Word 2001 document"
                or, worse
    "Graphics Interchange Format Image"

Does anyone know of a way to implement a systemwide
change to doc types (how they are displayed) so that the
two above examples would instead read:
    "MS Word 2001 doc"
    "GIF Image"

I mean, who _doesn't_ know that MS = Microsoft?

    Thanks!
