    I frequently have to perform this kind of operation and always use
    Dantz's Retrospect. It works like a charm!

    If you put a PC-formatted HD in a Mac, the Mac will want to
    initialize it. If you're in a networked environment, go with a
    cross-platform file server if you have one available to you.
