Go to Alsoft's web site and download the freeware List Open Files utility:

    http://www.Alsoft.com/AskAl/download.html

(click and hold on the wide button below where it says *Select a file to download:*).

This should give you a clue about what is open. The OS'es complaint refers to System flavored files, and not just Application files (e.g. a PDF or spreadsheet).

It may be that there are too many fonts open. If so, you can combine many into a single suitcase. The OS counts this as a single open file. There may also be some background processes launching at startup. Of the three apps you mention, there may be some plugins that have a lot of libraries or additional pieces that load at startup.

You write that you are on a G3. If it's a B&W, the processor may be broke and needs to be replaced, but consider the simpler (and less painful) solutions first.
