Next message: Dan Schwartz: "RE: [WinMac] Re: Web Server"
By the way, when was the last time you heard of a virus attacking
Linux vs Windows? Why have some branches of the government moved from
Windows web servers to Macintosh web servers?
Windows is NOT inherently insecure, but the DEFAULT settings are set
that way. The default settings of Linux are more secure. No matter
what, BUY A FIREWALL. Don't just run firewall software on your
machine, BUY A FIREWALL. A firewall appliance is MUCH harder to hack
than firewall software running on a general purpose computer because
you first have to secure the underlying OS on the computer! Some
firewall software comes with macros or whatever to help you out, but
if you go this route you should still run the firewall software on a
standalone machine.
If there is any way possible, run your web server from a CDROM as it
is much harder to hack if you don't have a hard drive to attack. Very
importantly, get consulting services if you are on the Internet. Not
only could your web server be at risk, you ENTIRE COMPANY could be as
well.
